One of the keys to creating a successful life is to spend as much time as possible working on yourself so that you can become more valuable to those who will give you money, to those who love you and to yourself for a long healthy and happy life.

The only way to increase your value in all these areas is to become persistent in taking the actions that will give you everything you want.

The reason most people are not successful is the jump from where they are today, to where they want to be is too big, and so they try and try, and after failing again and again, they give up.

One of the reasons I personally enjoy coaching so much and decided to embark on my own journey of self discovery was after seeing my own coach many years ago. It was the profoundly positive affect I felt that was so forward thinking and really helped me feel good about myself again.

I had years before experienced counselling and therapist and they helped me to focus on all that was wrong in my life and so I left each session feeling worse, and with little guidance to feel better.

Therapists and counsellors usually look back over someone’s life to discover why they are experiencing problems today.

There are two key reasons why I don’t personally like this approach, one is because the client gets to relive all their painful memories. When they do this they focus on pain and so they start to see and experience more and more problems. This puts clients into learnt unresourceful states designed to get the reverse of what they want.

The second reason I dislike this approach is because those that do come to me after years in therapy find that changing is a tough road for them, this is because they are conditioned to link everything that happens back past experiences. What this does is to give the client even more reasons/excuses why they cannot achieve their goals.

Coaching is forward thinking and is focused on obtaining specific goals. If blocks from the past do occur then deep change work will be used to change the perception of a memory or a belief to free the individual to keep moving forward without all the focus on painful experiences.

It is because of a lack of the following qualities many people fail to achieve their dreams. This is where the value of a life coach or mentor becomes critical. Knowing what a human needs before they can become successful is critical to anyone success.

The desire to change…

To start with the person has to want to change. The process of change is not always a smooth one because what you believe today will have to be challenged. This is because whatever you believe and have persistently practised so far has resulted in where you are today.

Belief in yourself

If you want to change you have to believe that the change is possible and that you are worthy of receiving the great things those changes will get you. Failure to have these beliefs will ensure that your goals are never met.

Motivation and action

Understand the motivation behind your goals is what will keep you going. You could be motivated by pain of a situation or you couple just want more. Understanding the motivation will help you stay focused on your goals. Without the necessary motivation you will never take the actions needed to get what you really want.

Persistence and self discipline

The biggest and most important quality is a persistence to even when things get tough to follow through with your plan. When people don’t see instant results they tend to give up. People who are successful did not become this way over night.

Take stock of your life now!

What do you have that you don’t want? What did you consistantly do to achieve this. The reason I ask this is to prove that persistance works it just needs channeling in a positive way.

2. You have to put importance on the judgement of others even though you have no idea by what standard you are being judged or how they are qualified to assess you.

3. You will have to accept their opinion and agree that on some level they are right even if consciously you think they are not.

4. You will then reject your own agreement with what they say and this will make you angry cross or upset.

5. You will then blame them for how upset they made you feel.

6. The truth is it’s you that makes you upset.

By giving away your personal power to others you are at their mercy and they know it. Why allow others to be your judge.

Creating goals is the hardest part of designing a successful life

What if you want to be successful but you’re not sure what at. There are coaches everywhere telling you that you can achieve anything you want. There are even books and films telling you to think yourself wealthy.

If you have the drive and the passion then you can achieve your dreams.

But what happens when you don’t know what your passion is. What happens if you don’t know what goal to go for?

If you have seen the Dragon’s Den you will see people taking charge of their lives and selling their houses to fund their dream to run a successful business.

These people have taken massive action, they have followed their dream, they have imagined themselves living the life they want, they have done everything coaches tell them to do only to be told to STOP…! by the dragons because in their opinion they are wasting their time and money.

The starting point which is where you are today and the millions of opportunities open to you need to be channelled into a direction you are happy to take that has the best chance in succeeding.

The goal is to discover your goal, your direction.

The principles of NLP is one of the few proven ways to gather information about a direction and an individual that proves to that individual if that direction is the right one to explore. Great questions can uncover your possibilities and the resources you require to achieve those results you desire.

Your goals have to be clarified and designed so you are not blindly walking down a lane to no where and you are on a journey where it is possible to reach your destination one step at a time.

Anyone that believes or displays a lack of confidence can block themselves from achieving many great goals in their life.

Most confidence issues can be cured very quickly through changing beliefs about yourself and others.

What is a lack of confidence.

What’s interesting about confidence is the fact that someone may suffer from confidence issues in certain areas of their life, yet display total confidence in others.

No one deserves to wear the badge “I am not confident”

You could be a professional, fully confident in your career, yet lack confidence with dating. Or you could be lacking confidence in public speaking or maybe you just have this persona that screams I’m not confident in certain situations.

Lack of confidence is created by a fear that something bad might happen.

What could someone be afraid of in their problem situations.

• Fear of humiliation
• Fear of being judged

Life changes whether we want it to or not.

As time passes it is very easy to accept those little changes without realising, only to discover over time the little changes have made a massive shift in your life direction over time.

Now you are not where you set out to be… So do you now let life make the decisions or do you take charge and get yourself back on track.

To achieve everything you want, you need a goal and a clear picture of where you are in relationship to that goal.

Where has life taken you?

As you sit there reading this have a look around you. Whatever decisions you have taken through out your life has brought you to this room right now.

Picture yourself in this room, look at the walls, the floors and the furniture.

Now notice what you notice about how you feel about the decisions you have taken to bring you to this very room right now.

As you ponder your feelings now ask yourself this…

…am I where I want to be? Is this the life I wanted? Am happy or can I do more.

Very often you will discover that there are many areas of your life that are not the way you want them to be. Career, relationships, money, debt, fun. Life can get so busy and it’s so easy to lose sight of what you really want.

If you have discovered that just maybe there are changes you would like to make, then you have two choices.

• Option 1 – Do nothing and hope you get what you want.
• Option 2 -  Get passionate about your life and start to discover what has been stopping you achieving.

Happiness is your right, and as long as what you want is physically possible then there is no reason why you should not have it.

In the words of Nike “…Just do it!”

Coaching is all about creating change and making changes in the clients life.

The coach will learn how the client reacts to the world? What sequence of events happen internally for the client to create either successes or blocks to success?

The job of a coach is to create freedom for the client so they can congruently live their dream life without fear.

A coaches job is also to ensure that the link between the clients dream life and reality is practical with a well formed plan.

The coach will start to point out to the client the possibilities of choice and freedom that are open to the client.

These small changes in direction have always been there for the client, but through habit and habitual thinking, deviation off the current path has held no good reason despite the incongruent feelings the client may have had.

Who might come for coaching and why? Coaching is usually sought when a cure of some kind is needed or the thought of carrying on is too painful.

On the whole most people will not seek change unless it is consciously affecting their lives or those they love.

People rarely seek prevention, but they will seek cures…

The problem here is people don’t know, what they don’t know. They are not at fault for failing to discover that just maybe their internal map of the world is only a fraction of the size of the individuals internal map who have achieved what they want.

When is the right time to discover what you don’t know you are missing out on? Most people are too scared to find out because this could mean focusing on a dream and dreams don’t come true.

The sad thing is for many they are right because if you focus on not achieving something you will succeed.

A good coach will help you focus on achievable goals. There maybe 10 or 20 steps to your big goal, but each step is a step closer.

And as long as what you want is physically possible and you have passion for your own life then almost anything is possible and there is a plan for it.

Believe in yourself and fearlessly take giants steps. Only when you decide to do this will the possibility of massive success be yours.

Rapport is the key

The quickest way to help someone see things your way is to get into rapport with them and discover how you can see the world from their perspective.

What you are after is for them to trust you, when they trust you they are far more likely to respect your views and listen to your ideas.

For example a sales man that tries to sell you a car because it’s cheaper than the big flash dealership down the road. Has made an assumption that price is what will make you buy. What you really want to know is, you will be looked after through the servicing of the car and if things go wrong.

Or how about the handsome guy who spends all night telling his date how great he is, and how cool his expensive his car is. Clearly missing the point that what she wants is, to feel great about herself when she’s with him. All he mastered was how to make himself feel good, and totally left her out.

The key to persuasion is presenting what you have to offer in a way that respects the needs of the people you’re communicating to. When they know you understand their needs and they feel good about themselves in your company then they are more likely to make the decision you wanted.

Rapport is one the critical keys to the art of persuasion.

Learning the art of rapport is beautiful art form of communication and one of the areas of NLP I personally enjoy the most.
