Too many people regret divorcing once the dust has settled

What do you do when a spouse is convinced the marriage is over? Unfortunately for many couples they are unaware of how much havoc their minds can play with their thoughts as they struggle to make sense of their marital crisis.

So I thought it worthwhile to expand this topic to help you either avoid this, or take action if divorce is on your mind.

I see a good volume of couples that have split up prior to seeing me and months / years later come to my session needing help to understand what happened and how can they ensure it doesn’t happen again.

When we experience relationship problems of course our feelings are real, but the meanings we put to them are not going to be as factual as we might think. A study was conducted and it revealed that at least 50% of people that chose to divorce [Read more...]

Should couples expect relationship problems?

I have put this post together because a few people have asked me why couples that started their lives together in love can find themselves in serious trouble without there being an obvious problem like an affair?

I want you to see the chain reaction that leads relationships to go wrong. Of course every situation is different, but there are some core challenges which underpins the process to go from a loving relationship to divorce.

The process I have illustrated is simplified so this post didn’t turn into a book, however please note each part has many complexities and consequences. [Read more...]

[IMPORTANT] Few couples are aware of this…

So here is an interesting thought, what if the identity you live in day-to-day works for one part of your life, but is disastrous for the other important parts and you don’t know this, or the impact you are having on your family.

Every couple that is in trouble experiences this in different ways, below is a couple of examples. As you scan through this post you can start to see how this pattern could have affected your relationship and what needs to happen to change it.

I remember one lady telling me she felt like one of her husbands employees. Obviously being CEO of his wife was never going to work, but he had a challenge, he was a very successful CEO and was so comfortable within his CEO identity this is how he lived his life even at home.

The challenge he faced was he had become upset at how the people that didn’t work for him (his family) responded to him. He thought his CEO status should just bring him love and respect, he was confused when it didn’t happen and assumed his family specially his wife didn’t love him. [Read more...]

If a relationship feels wrong is the relationship really the problem?

Many people are ending relationships thinking they know why only to discover months or years later that the reason they felt so bad was totally unrelated to their partner or the relationship. Some discover the discomfort gets worse when they leave for good and some discover the same problems are repeating themselves in their new relationships.

So why does a person want to leave? If a person is in emotional pain they are focused on one mission, to escape their pain and to feel better. If they have attach their pain to the relationship then they get feelings that tell them to leave.

The question is are they right, is the relationship really the root cause of their pain?

Many people are trying to change how they feel through their environment, the chemicals they put in their body, the way they look, the stuff they buy or they try to change people in their lives. What they discover is none of it really works.

What they are missing is the most profound change only happens when they work on changing themselves. [Read more...]

Why is my marriage failing?

The answer to this question is so important to understand no matter what the outcome. If you want to keep your marriage then naturally you have to understand why it’s failing to fix it.

But did you know that if a marriage fails and why it’s failed is not fully understood then that person should expect problems to follow them.

Look at this awful situation of not knowing why his marriage failed and what it did to this man and his family.

Two years ago I spoke to a gentleman who had divorced his wife and left his family. At the time he felt this was the best decision for him because they had spent so much time in conflict and he felt [Read more...]

Is the way you think going to lead you to love or divorce?

What are you and your partner feeding your brains about your relationship and what impact is it having on you both?

The reason I ask is because many people are not aware of the power that comes from consistently conditioning their brain. It’s powerful because it creates feelings and we attach feelings to things, thoughts and people.

So if a woman feels bad every time she talks to her husband, she will create an association to him that’s bad. She is conditioning her brain about how she feels about him.

You see from feelings people make decisions and many people are feeling wrong in their marriage and are deciding a divorce is the best solution to that problem. [Read more...]

Why are women most likely to file for a divorce?

Todays post is not just a warning to men it’s a message to men and women to beware of what’s happening in their own relationships without them knowing.

To be clear both people are 100% responsible for protecting their relationship.

Statistics are clearly showing that over 70% of women are filing for divorce and there are really good reasons for this.

This trend is actually very easy to understand once you know the significant differences between men and women.

The way men work is they like to get rid of their own problems very quickly. They can do this because they are less emotionally connected to their problems.

Women don’t work this way and their problems can have a bigger emotional affect on them. [Read more...]

Does your partner want a divorce and you want to save your marriage?

If your partner wants a divorce and you don’t agree it’s the right solution to your problems it’s critical to understand what has brought them to this point.

In terms of behaviour and communication the following will be impacting them:

  • They are likely to communicate a loss of feelings, such as a loss of love.
  • They will have lost trust in their future happiness in the relationship.
  • They will have lost respect for their partner.
  • They will have shifted their actions to be all focused on themselves.
  • You may feel that you are living with a totally different person.

You may notice a total change in their behaviours i.e. wanting to spend more time with their friends, work, children or interests.

All their behaviours will be designed to move them away from their pain and towards what will give them small bites of pleasure.

It’s likely that a person wanting a divorce will create a story that will justify why leaving the relationship is a good idea. [Read more...]

Should we divorce or should we stay together?

Perfectly reasonable question for couples who are struggling to see eye-to-eye especially if the challenge has gone on for long enough, or a sudden breach of trust has put the relationship into question.

As much as I would love to help the world just learn to love each other, some people are just not right for each other and it’s a painful fact of life.

The challenge they face is how do we know we are making the right decision? This is such an important question as so many couples break up for the wrong reasons, they end up looking for another partner totally opposite to their ex and discover that doesn’t work either this why the second marriage divorce rate is much higher than first marriage divorces. Many people also come into sessions wanting to get back a partner they have just left.

You see the mind can change our feelings and what seems right one day and can actually change the moment reality strikes and they are alone again.  [Read more...]

What she wanted…

What she wanted is for him to learn about her, to care about her and help her to feel that she was number one in his life. She wanted to feel that if he touched her it was because he wanted to get to know her and not that he just want to get something for himself.

She wanted with all her heart for him to help her feel safe and that just being her was enough for him.

She wanted him to look into her eyes and help her to know he would be there forever no matter what happens. [Read more...]

Why Do Women Ask For a Divorce?

What used to surprise me when I first started my practice, was how many men actively searched and came for help with their marriage problems.

When you see as many couples with marriage problems as I have over the years, you can’t help but see patterns emerge.

What I found most fascinating is the men were searching for help, but the point they searched was mainly when his wife had asked for a divorce. [Read more...]

How do you know when to get a divorce?

Unfortunately divorce is a very real part of our society, the question many people ask when their marriage is going consistently wrong is, “how do you know when to get a divorce?”

This is a great question because if anyone is asking this question they are clearly not happy to stay in a marriage that makes them unhappy. I couldn’t agree more, why should anyone accept ongoing misery year after year.

Everyone deserves to be happy and staying in a marriage just to please others is not the answer. [Read more...]

If we split up are we making a mistake?

Who Have I Become?

This is a significant worry that just prolongs the agony of staying in a relationship that feels wrong.

I also see too many people regret their decision to leave their partner, so if you are unsure please find out.

Too many people find that the solution of leaving is very painful so some short term effort could avoid that long-term pain. [Read more...]
