Who Do You Become to Cope With Your Marital Problems?

You can still love your partner and dislike who you have become in the marriage. Many feel they have lost themselves, they don’t like who they’ve become so they stop responding as themselves.

You may give a sharp answer to an ordinary question and regret your tone immediately.

You may agree to a plan, then spend the evening resentful that you said yes.

You may spend time away from your marriage and notice the conversation feels easier. You laugh more freely. You think less about what to say or how it might be received.

That relief can be followed by sadness.

You miss feeling that way with the person you hoped to share your life with.

You may begin to wonder whether leaving is the only way to feel like yourself again.

That relief deserves attention. So does what happens between you that makes being yourself so difficult.

The ways you have learned to cope may help you get through each day while gradually taking you further from the person you want to be.

Imagine a couple making plans for the weekend.

One partner would like a quiet evening together. Previous disagreements about plans have become tense, so when their partner suggests another busy weekend, they agree.

They tell themselves it is easier go with the flow. The conversation ends without an argument.

Later, resentment appears. They wanted time together, and now they are preparing for something they did not want to do. When their partner asks what is wrong, they say they are fine and turn back to their phone.

Agreeing helped them avoid a difficult conversation. It also left their real preference unspoken.

If this becomes familiar, someone who values honesty may find themselves concealing more. The marriage may have fewer open disagreements while they feel less able to participate honestly in it.

Understanding this requires looking at how their partner responds when they do speak. Some people have expressed their needs clearly and repeatedly. The other person’s willingness to listen and discuss differences respectfully matters too.

They may understand why they have become guarded and still miss their own warmth. They may have good reasons for feeling disappointed and still wish disappointment did not shape so many of their conversations.

There is the original difficulty, and there is the discomfort of living in a way they do not respect.

A person can acknowledge that a response helped them manage something painful and still reconsider what it is creating now.

That requires an honest assessment of their circumstances. An expectation of rejection may be accurate. A broken commitment needs attention. Responsibility for harmful conduct belongs to the person choosing it.

Where there is intimidation, coercion or abuse, protection may be necessary. Safety takes priority; becoming more affectionate or accommodating cannot substitute for addressing the harm.

Feeling better apart also has several possible explanations. Some people enjoy solitude within a happy marriage. Others feel relief because there is less work, less conflict or less fear.

The question is what would need to change for you to live with greater honesty, ease and self-respect, including when you are with your partner.

Being more like yourself may involve expressing a preference you once suppressed, offering care freely or maintaining a boundary that has been missing.

In my work, we look carefully at what is happening between you, the meaning you have given it, and what your ways of coping are creating.

We then examine how you want to respond, what you need to change, and whether the relationship can support that change.

One person cannot create mutual willingness. But you can become clearer about what you feel, what you value, what you will accept, and what you want to do next.

If this feels familiar, contact me to explore what has changed in your marriage, what it has cost you personally, and what would help you decide your next step.

I’m not going to ask you how you “feel", pay me to watch you argue, or try to find the person to blame.

I am looking to discover if the couple can become a team, overcome their problems together and create a dynamic that will create a loving and passionate life together.

My approach is to take you from where you are, to where you want to be… fast!

A 30 minute call with Stephen

In a short phone conversation, Stephen was able to quickly get to the heart of what the real issue was in our marriage – and why in almost a year of working on our marriage including 10 weeks of marriage counselling through a relationship therapy organisation, we weren’t really making any progress. I found Stephen to be extremely perceptive, as well as empathetic to our situation, while being able to quickly pinpoint the real sticking point in our marriage.
Many thanks
Olivia

Dear Stephen
Thank you for your time to listen to my experience in my marriage. You gave me encouragement to speak out to my partner in confidence. You made me realise that sometimes the way we make comments on each other can aggravate the situation and make it worse. Your advice made me feel revived.

Kind regards

Chipo
