Before you try to repair your marriage again!!! Do not ask only whether you still love each other because it’s not enough.
Ask whether you now understand what has to change.
Many couples try to restart their marriage because the pain of leaving feels unbearable. They promise to communicate better, spend more time together, or stop arguing. Those intentions may be sincere, but sincerity alone does not create a different marriage.
A second attempt needs more than hope. It needs a clear explanation of what keeps going wrong, a different response from each person, and enough willingness to keep practising when the initial relief disappears.
Otherwise, the couple may not be rebuilding the marriage. They may simply be restarting the same pattern with renewed optimism.
That does not mean every problem must be solved before trying again. It means you need enough clarity to answer three questions:
- What keeps happening between us?
- What will each of us do differently when it happens?
- Are we both genuinely willing to follow through?
Use the questions below to assess whether this is a real attempt at rebuilding, or another promise made because neither person knows what else to do.
The Second Attempt Test
Before trying again, answer these five questions honestly:
Answer yes or no to each question.
- Can we clearly name the recurring pattern that keeps damaging the marriage?
- Can each of us identify our own contribution without first listing our partner’s faults?
- Does each of us know exactly what we will do differently when the pattern begins?
- Have we agreed how we will recognise progress in ordinary life, not just during a good weekend?
- When one of us gets it wrong, are we both willing to repair the damage rather than argue about whether there is a problem?
How to read your answers
- 5 yeses: If you answered yes to all five questions, you may have the beginnings of a workable path forward. But intentions still need to become consistent behaviour.
- 3 or 4 yeses: If you answered yes to three or four, there may be potential, but the unanswered questions need to be addressed before making another promise.
- 0 to 2 yeses: If you answered yes to two or fewer, the issue may not be a lack of motivation. It may be that one or both of you still do not understand what rebuilding would require, or are not willing to do it.
If you want help examining what is happening in your particular relationship, you can apply for a Private Marriage Assessment. We will look at the recurring pattern, what change would require, and whether there is a realistic path forward.
