If your marriage isn’t working for any reason it’s a horrible experience, so when you have exhausted all avenues what next?
This lady has kindly taken time to share her experience of a first meeting with Stephen (The initial Consultation). She wanted a way forward, but really couldn’t see how they could ever make it work.
Q: What attracted you to Stephen?
A: I looked online trying to get a bit of help just because I didn’t know any other way and Stephens website stood out in terms of what he offered, it would appear that all the other counsellors and therapists just sort of listen and don’t actually give any advice.
Given our situation that is exactly what we didn’t need. We needed a third party who was willing to give his advice.
We have lots of friends and family who can just listen to us but that’s not what we needed.
Q: What did you experience in the Initial Consultation with Stephen?
A: It’s a bit daunting if you haven’t had therapy or counselling before, we didn’t know what to expect.
You do worry what is the hour and a half going to be like.
Stephens is really chilled and a very likeable person, but is also clearly very able to adapt himself to the person he is with. In doing so he really makes you feel at ease.
The hour and a half went so quickly, definitely too quickly. There isn’t a moment that drags. I felt like I was only in there 5 minutes and wish I could have spent so much more time with him.
It seemed more of just an informal chat, which gave us confidence in that first session that there was hope.
He tried to turn the negative into a positive and we actually had a laugh in the session, which there hasn’t been much of recently.
It wasn’t all downbeat which I can imagine a lot of other ‘marriage guidance councillors’ can be and you coming out crying.
There has been enough tears so it was really refreshing, and it was genuinely really nice to actually meet Stephen.
I really respect him. His approach is just fantastic.
Q: What did you leave the session feeling?
A: Both of us, as we spoke about it afterwards, left feeling we really wanted to and had to see Stephen again and that he could really help us.
Although we needed to do the work, he could push us in the right direction and would give us the tools to get us to where we want to be.
The only thing holding us back were the finances. We are using all our savings which is a total testament to him as we totally believe in him and feel it is a really positive step for us and he is the right person.
The initial meeting with Stephen is designed so
- Stephen can hear your individual stories
- Help you understand what’s the real problem.
- Help you understand what has to happen to fix it
The couple can then choose to go away and fix their own problem, or ask Stephen to help them fix it.
