Your Marriage May Not Need More Effort. It May Need a Different Kind.

Your efforts may be sincere, yet still leave you both feeling disconnected. The 5Cs offer a way to explore what your relationship may be missing.

After working with approximately 1,000 couples through my Marriage Breakthrough Intensive, one repeated pattern stayed with me.

Many of the people struggling most were not people who had stopped trying. They were tired of trying without understanding why so little seemed to change.

The question is not only, “How much are we putting into this marriage?” It is also, “What is our relationship receiving from the way we are investing?”

A couple can put enormous effort into building a life together. They work hard, raise children, support each other practically and plan for the future. Yet somewhere within that life, one or both can stop feeling understood, appreciated or wanted.

That does not make their investment meaningless. It means that looking after the life they have built is not necessarily the same as looking after the connection between them.

When good intentions keep missing each other

Consider what can happen when one person starts a conversation hoping to feel closer.

Their partner hears criticism and begins defending themselves. The first person feels unheard, so they explain more forcefully. The second feels increasingly attacked and withdraws.

Now both are responding to the pain the conversation is creating, rather than understanding what the other person needed from it.

The intention was connection. The result was more distance.

Repeating that conversation with greater determination may not help, because the problem is no longer just the subject being discussed. It is also the way they are experiencing and responding to each other.

Over time, unsuccessful attempts can make the investment itself feel pointless. Some couples stop raising important subjects. Others remain committed but begin living parallel lives. Some start considering separation because they cannot see another way forward.

What concerns me is when people conclude that nothing can change before understanding why their efforts have not been working.

Why I created the 5Cs

I wanted couples to have this understanding before their relationship reached a crisis.

Telling people to “invest in their marriage” is not enough. They need to understand what to invest in, why it matters and how to make that investment part of ordinary life, not something they attempt only when the relationship feels threatened.

That is why I created the 5Cs: Core, Compassion, Chemistry, Communication and Clarity.

They give relationship investment a focus: safety, care, desire, understanding and shared direction. Rather than looking only at what is going wrong, they help couples consider what their relationship needs to receive.

The investment may be less dramatic than another weekend away. It might begin with understanding what a partner means before defending against what they appeared to say, or making space to enjoy each other without turning the moment into another discussion about problems.

But without understanding why those choices matter, it is easy to return to familiar habits.

The aim is not simply to try harder for a few days. It is to become clearer about what deserves continued attention.

Ready to see where your relationship may need attention first?

Take the free Marriage Connection Assessment. Your answers will help highlight where connection may be stronger, where it feels under pressure and which of the five areas may be most useful to understand first.

The result reflects your experience. It is a starting point for reflection—not a diagnosis, a judgement of your partner or a verdict on the marriage.

Take the Marriage Connection Assessment

Afterwards, you will receive the free guide, The 5 Essentials of a Lasting Relationship, to help you understand what your result may be revealing and explore a practical first step.

Plus there is an offer for you to consider.

I’m not going to ask you how you “feel", pay me to watch you argue, or try to find the person to blame.

I am looking to discover if the couple can become a team, overcome their problems together and create a dynamic that will create a loving and passionate life together.

My approach is to take you from where you are, to where you want to be… fast!

I can not recommend Stephen highly enough – he not only saved our marriage, but has improved my marriage and myself as a person.

A 30 minute call with Stephen

In a short phone conversation, Stephen was able to quickly get to the heart of what the real issue was in our marriage – and why in almost a year of working on our marriage including 10 weeks of marriage counselling through a relationship therapy organisation, we weren’t really making any progress. I found Stephen to be extremely perceptive, as well as empathetic to our situation, while being able to quickly pinpoint the real sticking point in our marriage.
Many thanks
Olivia

Dear Stephen
Thank you for your time to listen to my experience in my marriage. You gave me encouragement to speak out to my partner in confidence. You made me realise that sometimes the way we make comments on each other can aggravate the situation and make it worse. Your advice made me feel revived.

Kind regards

Chipo
