Why Does Trying to Save My Marriage Keep Making Things Worse?

In today’s post, you will learn why you are struggling to fix your marriage and why every attempt seems to take you back to the same place. You may be working harder than ever to save it while unknowingly recreating the condition you are trying to escape by focusing on the problem you can see.

After receiving more than 5,000 applications and accepting around 1,000 cases, I have seen this pattern repeatedly.

When a marriage begins to break down, most couples do something entirely understandable.

They focus on the problem they can see. I call this the Presenting Problem.

Perhaps you are arguing constantly. One of you has withdrawn. There has been a loss of love, affection or intimacy. Trust has weakened. Work, money, parenting or family pressures have become a source of conflict. One partner may even be saying:

“I don’t know how I feel anymore.”

Whatever it is, that problem quickly becomes the centre of the marriage.

You assume that if you can solve it, the relationship will begin to recover.

Yet every attempt to discuss it leaves you more frustrated, defensive and further apart. You cover the same ground and end up in the same place, only a little worse each time.

Why?

Because there are three parts to the cycle you are running.

1. The Issue

The Issue is the Presenting Problem that has become visible.

It is what you talk about, argue about, lose sleep over and search for answers to: poor communication, a housemate marriage, lost intimacy or a partner who no longer seems to listen.

The Issue is real. It may require difficult decisions and meaningful change.

But the moment you try to deal with it, something else begins.

2. The Process

The Process is the interaction pattern that appears when you try to deal with the Issue.

One person raises a concern. The other hears criticism, pressure or disappointment and begins to explain, defend or withdraw.

The first experiences that response as avoidance or a lack of care, so they push harder. The second feels more attacked or inadequate, so they close down further or fight back.

Before long, you are no longer dealing only with the original Issue. How it is being handled becomes a second problem.

Now you are arguing about how it was raised, the tone that was used, who became defensive and who walked away.

The Process creates new problems while failing to resolve the one that started the conversation.

3. The Condition

The Condition is what the marriage gradually becomes after living inside that Process repeatedly.

One partner may feel alone and desperate to be heard. The other may feel criticised and convinced that nothing they do will ever be enough.

Conversations become loaded before they begin. One prepares to push; the other prepares to defend.

The marriage begins to feel tense, unsafe and exhausting.

That Condition travels into the next conversation. Resentments stack and become the filter through which each person interprets the other’s behaviour.

A question sounds like an accusation. A request feels like a demand. Silence is interpreted as rejection.

The Condition created by yesterday’s Process shapes the Process you run today.

The cycle becomes:

Issue → Process → Condition → more difficult Process → more Issues → worsening Condition

This is why two loving people can spend years discussing their marriage and still feel that nothing changes.

It can wear down a couple whose original problem may still have been changeable.

What this looks like inside a marriage

Imagine one partner says:

“We never talk anymore. I feel as though we are living separate lives.”

She is trying to explain that she feels lonely and wants to reconnect.

But he does not hear loneliness. He hears:

“You are failing me again. You are not a good enough husband.”

He explains that he is tired, busy and carrying a great deal of responsibility. When that does not settle the conversation, he becomes defensive or withdraws.

She does not experience his response as self-protection. She experiences it as proof that he does not care.

So she pushes harder:

“Why can’t you just talk to me?”

He feels even more criticised and convinced that nothing he says will be enough. He shuts down further or walks away.

She feels abandoned.

The next time she raises the problem, she brings the hurt from every previous conversation. Her approach becomes more urgent, and his defence appears more quickly.

She pushes harder. He withdraws further.

Over time, both become trapped inside different experiences of the same marriage.

She believes:

“I have to keep pushing because otherwise nothing will change.”

He believes:

“I have to protect myself because every conversation becomes another example of how I am failing.”

Neither begins the conversation intending to create more distance. But that is exactly what their Process produces.

The Issue was the loss of connection.

The Process became pursuit, defence and withdrawal.

The Condition became resentment, emotional distance and a marriage in which neither felt safe or understood.

Now his withdrawal, her pressure and the way they speak to each other have all become new Issues.

She sees his withdrawal as proof that he does not care. He sees her pressure as proof that it is unsafe to open up.

That is how two people can work hard to fix their marriage while becoming more disconnected every time they try.

If the Presenting Problem were the whole problem, repeatedly trying to solve it would eventually create a different result. When it does not, you have to examine the Process surrounding it.

What is maintaining their Process of disconnection?

In this example, one factor maintaining the Process is that the two partners are speaking for different reasons.

She speaks to create connection. He listens for a problem he must explain or solve.

Because neither understands the other’s underlying need, she experiences his defence as a lack of care, while he experiences her vulnerability as criticism.

The result is predictable: she tries harder to create connection, he tries harder to protect himself, and both leave the conversation feeling more alone.

Talking more will not necessarily solve that. They first need to understand what each person is hearing, needing and protecting whenever the Issue appears.

What has to happen next?

The first step is not to try harder.

It is to obtain a more accurate diagnosis.

You need to understand:

  • What the Presenting Problem is
  • What Process appears when you try to deal with it
  • What each person hears beneath the other’s words
  • What Condition that Process has created over time

Once the Process can be seen clearly, it can begin to be interrupted. The aim is not to wallpaper over the symptom. It is to understand what is maintaining it..

Are you ready to understand what is really happening?

If you have been working harder to save your marriage but keep ending up in the same place, the problem may not be a lack of effort.

You may be trying to solve the Presenting Problem without seeing the Process that maintains it or the Condition that Process has produced.

The Private Marriage Triage Call is for people ready to look beneath the surface, understand what may be maintaining the crisis and identify what needs to happen next.

This is not a call to help you prove that your partner is wrong.

It is not a promise that every marriage can or should be saved.

It is an opportunity to examine what is actually happening between you with honesty and clarity.

If you are ready to stop going round in circles and get a more accurate understanding of your marriage, apply for a Private Marriage Triage Call here.

You cannot change a Process you cannot see.

A 30 minute call with Stephen

In a short phone conversation, Stephen was able to quickly get to the heart of what the real issue was in our marriage – and why in almost a year of working on our marriage including 10 weeks of marriage counselling through a relationship therapy organisation, we weren’t really making any progress. I found Stephen to be extremely perceptive, as well as empathetic to our situation, while being able to quickly pinpoint the real sticking point in our marriage.
Many thanks
Olivia

Dear Stephen
Thank you for your time to listen to my experience in my marriage. You gave me encouragement to speak out to my partner in confidence. You made me realise that sometimes the way we make comments on each other can aggravate the situation and make it worse. Your advice made me feel revived.

Kind regards

Chipo
