Case Study: She Didn’t Fall Out of Love. She Stopped Recognising Herself.

The hidden reason behind a six-year affair – and why the affair was never the real problem.

Quick Summary

Clients: David (53) and Claire (50)

Married: 28 years

Together since: Their teenage years

Children: Two

Challenge: Claire had been having an affair for six years. David believed the affair had destroyed their marriage. Claire insisted she still loved her husband but admitted she no longer recognised the woman she had become inside the marriage.

The Situation

If you had met David and Claire, you would never have guessed.

They had built a wonderful life together.

A successful career

A beautiful home.

Children they adored.

Nearly three decades together after falling in love as teenagers.

To everyone else they were proof that love could last.

Until David discovered Claire had been living a double life.

Not for a few weeks.

Not for a few months.

For six years.

His world collapsed.

Like most people, he reached the obvious conclusion.

“She can’t possibly love me if she’s lied to me for six years.”

Claire understood why he thought that.

But she knew something that made even less sense.

She had never stopped loving him.

The Real Problem

As we explored their story, something surprising emerged.

David wasn’t an unkind man.

He loved his wife deeply.

He worked hard to provide for his family and took enormous pride in protecting the people he loved.

But David approached life with exceptionally high standards.

When Claire spoke about something that mattered to her, he naturally analysed it.

If she was upset, he looked for the solution.

If she had an idea, he improved it.

If she reacted emotionally, he explained why she shouldn’t.

None of it came from bad intentions.

He genuinely believed he was helping.

What he never realised was the effect it was having.

Over the years Claire slowly stopped sharing parts of herself.

Not because she was frightened of David.

Because she no longer felt she could simply be herself around him.

Without either of them noticing, she had become the organiser, the supporter, the mother, the wife.

The woman David had fallen in love with was still there.

She just didn’t know how to find her anymore.

Why the Affair Lasted Six Years

One day Claire met another man.

The affair began.

Many people assume an affair lasting six years must have been built on overwhelming passion or a desire to leave the marriage.

It wasn’t.

She wasn’t looking for another husband.

She wasn’t looking for a different life.

And contrary to what David believed, the affair wasn’t really about sex.

It was about something far more dangerous.

When she was with this other man she didn’t feel analysed.

She didn’t feel corrected.

She didn’t feel she had to edit herself before speaking.

She laughed.

She relaxed.

She felt playful again.

For the first time in years she recognised the woman she used to be.

The affair became what Claire believed was the oxygen she needed to survive inside her marriage.

Every time she tried to end it, she felt as though she was losing the only place where she could still breathe.

It created a prison.

She couldn’t leave the affair because she feared losing herself.

She couldn’t leave her marriage because she still loved David.

For six years she lived between those two worlds, carrying guilt every single day.

Why Previous Attempts Failed

When the affair was discovered, every conversation focused on the obvious questions.

Why had she done it?

How could she lie for so long?

How could David ever trust her again?

Those questions mattered.

But they weren’t the questions that would save the marriage.

Because even if the affair ended, nothing had changed about the marriage that had quietly taught Claire to hide parts of herself.

They were trying to remove the symptom without understanding the condition that had allowed it to exist.

The Breakthrough

Everything changed during one conversation.

Claire said quietly,

“I thought the affair was what I needed.”

After a long silence she corrected herself.

“It wasn’t.”

“I didn’t need another man.”

“I needed to find myself.”

That became the turning point.

David stopped asking,

“Why was he better than me?”

Instead he asked,

“How did we unintentionally create a marriage where the woman I love no longer felt she could be herself?”

That question changed everything.

Because the affair had never really been her oxygen.

It had simply become the only place where she remembered how to breathe.

The Process

The work wasn’t about teaching David to become someone else.

Nor was it about asking Claire to forget what had happened.

Instead, both of them began understanding the unintended roles they had created.

David learned that love isn’t only expressed through protecting, solving and correcting.

Sometimes the greatest gift we give our partner is creating enough emotional safety that they can reveal more of themselves without fear of being judged or improved.

Claire learned that losing herself had started years before the affair.

The affair hadn’t healed that wound.

It had merely distracted her from it.

Together they built something neither had experienced before.

A marriage where honesty felt safer than self-protection.

A marriage where curiosity replaced criticism.

A marriage where both people could become more fully themselves instead of quietly adapting to survive.

The Turning Point

Months later David said something remarkable.

“For years I thought I was loving Claire.”

“What I was actually loving was the version of Claire that had learned to fit around me.”

Claire smiled through tears.

“And I thought the affair had saved me.”

“Now I realise it only reminded me that I’d lost myself.”

That was the beginning of genuine recovery.

Not because the affair had been explained away.

But because they finally understood what it had been pointing towards all along.

The Outcome

The affair had ended.

Trust was rebuilt slowly, honestly and without shortcuts.

But that wasn’t the greatest victory.

The greatest victory was that Claire no longer felt she had to leave the relationship to reconnect with herself.

David no longer believed love meant constantly improving the person beside him.

He discovered that acceptance often creates more growth than correction ever can.

Today they describe their marriage very differently.

Not because they never disagree.

But because both of them feel free to bring their whole selves into the relationship.

The Biggest Lesson

Most people believe affairs begin when love ends.

Sometimes they do.

But sometimes something else happens first.

One person slowly disappears inside the relationship.

The affair isn’t what they’re searching for.

They’re searching for themselves.

That doesn’t excuse the betrayal.

It explains why ending the affair alone is rarely enough.

If the marriage continues asking one person to become less of themselves, the deeper problem remains.

Healthy marriages don’t require either person to disappear.

They create the conditions where both people can become more of who they truly are.

Because people rarely leave a relationship simply because they’ve stopped loving their partner.

More often, they leave because they’ve stopped recognising who they have become within it.

A 30 minute call with Stephen

In a short phone conversation, Stephen was able to quickly get to the heart of what the real issue was in our marriage – and why in almost a year of working on our marriage including 10 weeks of marriage counselling through a relationship therapy organisation, we weren’t really making any progress. I found Stephen to be extremely perceptive, as well as empathetic to our situation, while being able to quickly pinpoint the real sticking point in our marriage.
Many thanks
Olivia

Dear Stephen
Thank you for your time to listen to my experience in my marriage. You gave me encouragement to speak out to my partner in confidence. You made me realise that sometimes the way we make comments on each other can aggravate the situation and make it worse. Your advice made me feel revived.

Kind regards

Chipo
