What 5,000 Requests for Help Have Taught Me About Marriage

For more than two decades, I have helped couples in crisis.

For the past 15 years, I have also personally read and assessed more than 5,000 written applications from people asking for help with their marriages.

Those applications have taught me something important.

By the time someone asks for help, the problem they describe is often only the part of the marriage they can currently see.

People write about feeling lonely beside someone they still love. They describe having the same conversations repeatedly, trying to explain what they need, hoping something will change, and gradually becoming exhausted when nothing does.

Some have stopped asking altogether.

Their silence does not necessarily mean the problem has been resolved. Often, it means they no longer believe speaking will make a difference.

Others feel that nothing they do is ever good enough. They give to the relationship, the family and the practical demands of daily life, yet their efforts seem to be noticed only when something needs correcting.

Some miss feeling wanted.

The household functions. The children are cared for. Responsibilities are shared. But the relationship feels more like a practical arrangement than a loving partnership.

Others are struggling with who they have become inside the marriage.

They have become guarded, reactive or withdrawn. They hold back things they would once have shared freely. They dislike how they behave during arguments, but find themselves repeating the same patterns.

By the time someone asks for help, they may be carrying far more pain than the problem they first describe.

The problem you notice may not be where the difficulty began

A couple may believe their main problem is intimacy.

But underneath that, there may be years of unresolved hurt, feeling misunderstood or no longer feeling emotionally safe with each other.

Another couple may believe they have a communication problem.

But the deeper difficulty may be that both people have become so protective that almost everything the other says is heard as criticism, rejection or pressure.

A couple who feel more like housemates may believe they simply need to make more effort.

But the distance may have developed through patterns that began much earlier.

The visible problem is real.

It simply may not be the best place to begin.

The issue receiving the most attention is not always the issue that needs attention first.

This is why telling couples to “communicate more” or “make more effort” can be unhelpful. If the underlying pattern remains unchanged, more effort may only produce more frustration.

Before trying harder, it can be useful to step back and ask:

  • Where does connection still feel strong?
  • Where has it become strained?
  • What keeps happening between us?
  • What have we stopped bringing into the relationship?
  • What may need attention first?

From the applications I have read and the couples I have worked with, I have identified recurring patterns across five important areas of marriage.

Those areas form the basis of something I will be sharing on Sunday, September 13.

I have created a free assessment to help people look at their marriage more broadly, rather than focusing only on the latest argument or most visible problem.

It will not judge your marriage or tell you whether to stay or leave.

It is designed to help you see where connection may be strongest, where it may be under pressure and where it may make sense to look first.

I will share the Marriage Connection Assessment on Sunday.

Because meaningful change usually begins before trying harder.

It begins with understanding what is actually happening.

I’m not going to ask you how you “feel", pay me to watch you argue, or try to find the person to blame.

I am looking to discover if the couple can become a team, overcome their problems together and create a dynamic that will create a loving and passionate life together.

My approach is to take you from where you are, to where you want to be… fast!

I can not recommend Stephen highly enough – he not only saved our marriage, but has improved my marriage and myself as a person.

A 30 minute call with Stephen

In a short phone conversation, Stephen was able to quickly get to the heart of what the real issue was in our marriage – and why in almost a year of working on our marriage including 10 weeks of marriage counselling through a relationship therapy organisation, we weren’t really making any progress. I found Stephen to be extremely perceptive, as well as empathetic to our situation, while being able to quickly pinpoint the real sticking point in our marriage.
Many thanks
Olivia

Dear Stephen
Thank you for your time to listen to my experience in my marriage. You gave me encouragement to speak out to my partner in confidence. You made me realise that sometimes the way we make comments on each other can aggravate the situation and make it worse. Your advice made me feel revived.

Kind regards

Chipo
